The collection consists of letters from physician and gold miner Luther Fitch (b. 1821) to his family and father, Luther Fitch (1803-1877), in Portland, Maine. The letters describe his voyage and life in California. There are also later letters (1872-1873) written by his nephew, Luther E. Fitch, in California.

Luther Fitch (fl. 1850-1873) joined the California Gold Rush in 1850. He traveled via the Isthmus of Panama to Foster's Bar in Yuba County, CA, where he practiced as a physician and mined for gold in 1851-1865.
